The Plateau State Police Command says it has recovered about 1,097 arms and ammunition from criminals in the state. A breakdown of the recovered weapons indicated that 171 arms, 795 ammunition and 131 cartridges were recovered.

The command also expressed concern over the increase in rape cases in the state, with about 19 cases and 24 arrests between February 2018 and now. The suspects have also been charged to court for prosecution.

The Plateau State Commissioner of Police, Undie Adie, stated this during a press conference where he also paraded suspected syndicate which specialised in stealing of cars, snatching of motorcycles and culpable homicide.

He said, “In compliance with the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, to all state command commissioners of police to mop up illegal and prohibited firearms, the Plateau State Police Command promptly commenced the mop-up exercise which has so far yielded results.

“It is regrettable that the command is witnessing an increase in cases of rape on the Plateau. On January 30, 2018, the command paraded three young men who gang-raped a 14-year-old at Angwan Rogo area of Jos metropolis. They have been charged to court.”

Adie advised parents to give more attention to their female children “so that they don’t stray into the hands of criminally-minded young men.”
