A non-governmental organisation, ROWEAD Foundation, and the United Nations Information Centre in Lagos, have trained women in the latest trends in agriculture and how to become successful farmers.

Showing participants at the training how to use modern technologies to become successful farmers, experts in agri-business said that with more investments in the sector by the government, thousands of jobs would be created annually in Nigeria.

While calling on women to show more interest in agriculture, ROWEAD founder, Mrs. Adaobi Alex-Oni, said that other nations were already developing their economies through large-scale farming and other related activities.

Also speaking at the event, Chief Executive Officer, Amicable Mundiale, Amaka Chukwudum, a former bank worker turned farmer, said that with the right type of support from all stakeholders, more women would begin to see the benefits of embracing agriculture.

She stated, “Agriculture in Nigeria is declining because we project it in a very poor way, while glamorising other professions. This should stop because agriculture is a very noble profession capable of transforming any economy.

“When I left the banking sector, I went for several trainings and started snail farming at my backyard. Today, I export snails to Germany, United Kingdom and the United States. A lot of women can do this too to help the economy grow.”

Another established farmer, who helped in training the participants at the event, Mr. King-David Taiwo, stated that apart from establishing farms, women could become successful entrepreneurs by buying and selling agricultural equipment.
